I've always used a few bobbie pins. Also twist it before you wrap it around into the bun. Hairnets work too!

put it in a ponytail. then twist it around until it has made a bun. put a bunch of bobby pins in. put a hair net around it. a couple more bobbys. a little hairspray and voila!
How to Make a Ballet Bun

Materials List

鈥?Spray bottle filled with water

鈥?Hairspray

鈥?Hair gel

鈥?Hair pins (Thicker type with plastic tips.)

鈥?Bobby pins

鈥?Elastic band

鈥?Comb %26amp; brush (Fine tooth comb preferable)

鈥?Hair net (Fine net with elastic edges. Should be same color as hair.)

1 To start the process, lightly spray your hands and the hair with water. This will give you better control over the hair. Gather the hair and pull it back. Apply hair gel if you need more control over the hair.

2 Use a hair brush to smooth out rough or uneven areas. Form a pony tail by brushing the hair up from the jawline to the top part of the back of the head. This will form a high bun. The placement of the pony tail determines the placement of the bun. Mid and low buns are sometimes used with short hair, or to accomodate a headpiece. Very short hair can be done in two low side buns, or use hair clips to fasten the hair down without a bun.

3 Use an elastic hair band to secure the pony tail. A tidy pony tail with hair drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun.

4 Apply more water or gel to keep the hair neat, and twist the pony tail.

5 Coil the pony tail into a tight circle.

6 Use hair pins all around the coil to secure it to the rest of the hair. Slide each pin through the outer part of the coil, then into the base of the bun.

7 Wrap a fine hair net around the bun. Keep twisting and wrapping so that the hair net tightly secures the bun. Make sure the hair net is the same color as the hair.

8 Large buns may protrude too much. A flat bun is preferable. To flatten, remove all pins; the hair net will hold the bun. Then flatten the bun and repin all around the bun.

9 For extra hold, when the bun and hair are all secure, use hairspray. If you need to add a headpiece, secure it tightly with bobby pins.
This may sound weird but it's by far the best way to do a bun. It's called a sock bun. You take a sock and cut off the toe so it's just a tube. You then roll to sock tube into a doughnut. You make a pony tail in the middle or top of your head and place the doughnut sock around the pony tail kind of like its a hair tie only it only goes around once. Then you stick your finger in the middle of the pony tail so that it lets your hair go in a circle. You push your hair around the sock so it covers the sock. You put a hair tie around it to hold it in place then wrap the extra hair ends around your bun and use bobypins to secure. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense it really is the best way to do a bun and it looks really clean. Good luck!
Steps

1

Step One

part damp hair on whichever side you prefer and comb straight

2

Step Two

add some hair gel or pomade to straighten and give hair the slicked back look

3

Step Three

pull tight into ponytail (medium high 2 1/2 inches from the nape of your neck)

4

Step Four

grab the end of the ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie(creating a bun) in a clockwise motion until the length of your hair is fully wrapped around the hair tie in a bun shape

5

Step Five

take each of the bobby pins and push them in at an angle towards the center of the bun. The pins goes it an angle towards the center of the ponytail at: 2 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock.
do exactly what Hannah darling(your first answer) said. just thought i might add a hint that my mom taught me. she went to beauty school. put all the pins UNDER your pony tail, cause if you put them on top of it: 1- it won't stay very well. and 2- it bends the bobby pin open and then its basically ruined and you would have to go out and buy new ones. happy dancing!
I put my hair in a super tight ponytail, then i take gell and grease it back untill it is smooth. Then i just twist and add occasional bobby pins
